What differentiates direct competition from indirect for an advertising company? Example below.?

So lets say were selling advertising space that a lot more interactive then newspaper and magazine advertising. Would the newspaper companies be considered direct competition if they are targeting my exact target market? Or because our advertising medium is completely different, would they then be called indirect competitors?

Think about it this way: what percentage % of market do you own? How it can be compared to the % of market share other company does? Basically, your direct competitors not necessary those who sell advertising space, but those who makes similar money on it. Say, American Express will not be your competitor, because it’s far beyond your reach. You have nothing to share. But a site of your streight and your vertical will be a competitor, for sure
