yes then do the hot brands leave a scar on the skin freeze brands just kill the hairs and prevent them from growing back the same as before.

Freeze branding is where the hair grows back white. Hot branding is what they do to native breeds, such as Hanovarians, when they are youngsters, and this leaves a mark that you can see, but not a white mark. I am always looking out for breed marks when I watch the show jumping... although they are quite often hard to see when you are watching it on the tv !!!!

Freeze branding leaves a white scar on all coats except grey, where it tends to kill the coat. Hot branding kills the hair follicles and therefore leaves a naked scar.

Freeze branding (the branding iron is frozen in liquid nitrogen.) which is used on the SB’s, causes the hair to grow back white, where as hot branding, used on TB, kills the hair folicles and causes a scar.

Freeze brand irons are usually left on the horse just long enough to kill the pigment, so the hair grow back white. On a grey horse, they are left on longer so they kill the hair and it doesn’t grow back, so it looks like a burn brand in the end. The difference is, a freeze brand doesn’t hurt when it is done, although it hurts for a while after, but the horse doesn’t associate the pain with humans. With hot branding, the horse knows who’s causing the pain right away. So I think freeze branding is better.

Freeze marking your horse will turn the affected area white and is more prominent. Hot branding actually burns the hair follicle and skin to leave it’s mark. Hot brandings can be hard to see under winter coats and more obvious in the summer, and more painful to the horse! That is why alot of people use freeze marking as a deterrent to stop people stealing their horses (they can be easily identified). Hope this helps! x

Usually freeze branding is lighter in colour to hot branding as others have mentioned in their answers. Standardbreds have their brands on the neck and thoroughbreds have them on both shoulders. Both types of brandings show the registry they are from info about that horses bloodlines and year of birth.
I had a grey arab freeze branded many years ago when it wasnt all that common, and because he was going to go whiter and whiter, the brander left the freezing iron on a little longer to make it go dark instead of white.
Worked for me and he also gave local anesthetic on the shoulder to help with the pain of the branding procedure.

Yes there is a diffrent mark. Freeze branding is white and I think that it is better. Dosent hurt as bad. I would suggest if you chose to hot iron or freeze barnd your horse to freeze brand it.
