Can you have a business license and still receive unemployment assistance?

Posted on November 20th, 2009 by admin in business |

Right now I’m receiving unemployment benefits but I’m looking to start a business next month. Can I have a business licenses even though I’m not planning to do business for the next 3 - 6 months. Would that affect my unemployment?

Thanks!

Merely having the license won’t affect anything. If you do generate any income however you must report it on your regular benefit claims.

This is merely my opinion, but I would say it should not as you would not be reporting any income yet correct? I would call your local unemployment office and verify.

If you already had a license, but no business, that would not be a problem. However, any work that you do in order to start a business in the future, including the time that you spend applying for a business license, must be reported to the agency that receives unemployment claims. It may or may not affect your eligibility.
