You build a team of people around you, each of them having knowledge and insight that you don’t have. These team members can’t just be friends or other people you happen to know. You will have to select each team member actively and based on what they bring to the table.

Then, you meet with your team on a regular basis to discuss relevant issues:

-what’s happening with the technology?
-what are competitors doing?
-what do customers think?
- etc, etc

Also, find a mentor (someone you admire, or who has done something similar to what you want to do).

The best part? People will most often volunteer to give advice and be a mentor for free!

Now that I have accepted this job I’ve become in patient and want to do actual tech work again. How long should I wait to ask for a promotion to tech position?

Give it two or three months so your new employer can get a feel for your value as an employee.

They’ll typically want some time to evaluate your dependability, performance and ability to get along with others prior to considering you for a promotion.

It seems that due to people just finding the images online and scanning them to get the giftcards, the promotion was discontinued.

I’m thinking of joining Air Force, Navy, or Coast Guard.

of these three NONE are very ‘fast’ when it comes to promotions as not only is there a minimum time in Grade and Time in Service requirement, you also have to pass exams and/or be selected by a board of your peers.

the "fastest" is the Army but their system is different than the others they go by points and the number of points needed changes frequently.

Promotions come to those who deserve them and work for them.

I wouldn’t count on it. Better to put in checked bags. Also, it’s not the sort of thing to worry about having stolen. Electronics, jewelry, etc. are the biggest concern.
