How does an automatic promotion to e3 work?

Do a paper come to the commander letting him know that the promotion is coming up and he has to sign it? does it just show up on your erb? or if it is mid month like mine is jan 20 will it show on jan 20 or feb.1 on my erb?

Once you have fulfilled the required time in grade / time in service your name comes up on a list at the battalion level. Your name is kicked down to the company level from battalion for a “go” or “no go” decision.. Usually during a platoon sergeants meeting with the 1SG, the 1SG will ask the Solders platoon sergeant if he recommends the Soldier for promotion. If the platoon sergeant says yes, the 1SG sends a “GO” up to battalion and the Soldier should get promoted the following month on the 1st. If the Platoon Sergeant says no, he will have to provide the 1SG with a valid reason. A few negative 4856’s showing a recent pattern of misconduct will do the trick. The first line supervisor should counsel the Soldier to let him know that he is not getting promoted, why and what he has to do to get promoted. That counseling statement recommending the Soldier not be promoted gets sent to Battalion through the Company. Failure to provide the recommendation for non promotion will result in the Soldier getting promoted even if he is a dirt dag and doesn’t deserve it..

  1. it is not always automatic. if your a f.u.c.k. up then you will stay e1 or e2. but usually your Squad leader will take care of you.
