How to handle a promotion that is more work than you can handle?
I just recently received a promotion. A big one. I am thankful I received it, but it is too much to handle. I know I am not ready for this position but yet they insist because we are short handed. I have only 4 years experience and the director position requires 15 years. I am a worker tech bee and happy with that, not a leader. I don’t want to fail the company. I even have bad memory and cannot speak very well. How would you guys deal with this?
You work hard and spend some time working on your self esteem.
Perhaps the company sees in you that which you can not — yet — see in yourself. Take each day and find something new to learn. Accept that you will make a mistake or two. Don’t let them paralyze you, learn from them.
Consider going to Toastmasters to help improve your confidence and public speaking. Work on your writing. And develop a managerial style of how you would have like to been managed. People look up to good managers. But remember you are their boss, not their friend.
Managing people is much different than acquiring technical skills. But managing people with great technical skill is an art.
Good luck!
