Xerox Star introduction & promotional video - part 1 of 3
This is where everything started. This is where Apple got it’s ideas - or more so Steven Jobs - and later Microsoft.
The designers at Xerox did an amazing job and created something years years - decades - ahead of anything else.
It still amazes me how few has changed in the principles and how much “networked” they where back than. They had an workflow that’s only possible today again, with the internet accessible for everyone!

it’s also very funny to see someone explain what a mouse is in 2009 ^^
You DON’T need an …
You DON’T need an INTERNAL drive
EXACTLY what i said …
EXACTLY what i said
\YOU NEED A DRIVE
You don’t need a …
You don’t need a drive to update Mac OS.
You would need a DVD drive if you’d need to reinstall Mac OS, what you really never, never, ever have to do. It’s not like Windows. My Mac OS installation is three years old.
And if you need a drive you can attach the EXTERNAL drive, which looks wonderfull, is powered by the USB port and you DON’T HAVE TO TAKE IT WITH YOU.
Sub Notebooks had external drives for ages. I had
TWO Sonys with external drives. But when Apple does it, it’s BAAaaad. Lol.
can you rent a dvd …
can you rent a dvd drive to install programs or update mac osx? you need a drive
First of all: I …
First of all: I don’t waste my time with computer games. I use computers to make stuff. And learn stuff.
Second you can put ANY OS on a Mac. Third: MacBook is not made for Gamers, but with the 9400M you could play some games. Download them in Windows over Steam, for example.
Forth: I don’t need DVD for movies. You can rent or buy movies online now. Welcome to the 21st cenutry. Saves you a lot of battery, too.
And, btw, the MacBook Air has a target audience.
There’s other notebooks, you know.
as a mac lover i …
as a mac lover i can see that you think you can download games, like chess?
\but we real gamers play games like half life, total war, etc, you cant download real games.
\and YOU said you need a dvd drive every four months or so, but i suppose you dont use your macbook air for games, or to watch dvds, what the heck do YOU use the macbook air for? word processing?
I sure can live …
I sure can live without an internal DVD drive. That’s a fact. Most people can. And that’s what the MacBook Air is for.
Hey, I think I could even live without a Disc drive at all.
I don’t need to burn movies or play games. And if I would I’d download the games from online stores.
What do YOU need a DVD-Drive for?
if you use the dvd …
if you use the dvd drive everyday or you use it once a quater, you still need a dvd drive
To get the …
To get the functionality seen in this video you were in a six figure number.
That Apple “stole” from Xerox is a myth.
If you know who worked at Apple and what they did before working at Apple you know why.
Jeff Raskin, for example
I need my DVD drive …
I need my DVD drive about once in a quarter.

I wrote it clear as day: concrete sources cited in Wikipedia (last section of article about mouse and GUI).
Btw. you should red …
Btw. you should red what Jeff Raskin has to say about all this.
Quote:
[] … is more correct than he knew when he wrote that the world has generally overestimated the influence of PARC on the Mac, as even some of the concepts that he attributes to PARC’s influence predated PARC … []
No, you can’t post …
No, you can’t post just anything there.
You must state the sources. Although, still there is a lot wrong on Wikipedia … but, hey, every grown up with media competence knows how to deal with that …
wikipedia? is that …
wikipedia? is that your source of all knowledge? anyone can post information on wikipedia, it is not a real source for anything reliable.
No, xerox never got apple shares, they invited gates there to program for them and jobs to build for them, both gates and jobs said no but still stole thier ideas.
\You were 5 years old when this took place, I was already studying computers, a little something called DOS
Just read article …
Just read article about mouse from wikipedia, it cites sources.
Mouse was invented years before Xerox PARC even started to exist and it had nothing to do with the Xerox as company at all.
And yes, Xerox got Apple’s shares as condition to allow Jobs’ people to examine their Xerox Alto system back in December 1979. Again, go to Wikipedia, it cites sources.
You may wish to read more than watch ignorant documentaries.
Had Xerox knew how …
Had Xerox knew how to advertise it big time and Gates and Jobs haven’t ripped it off, they would have been the ones running the PC industry and not by Apple and Microsoft. Too bad the Xerox Star wasn’t well known and too expensive.
lie
\xerox was the …
lie
\xerox was the first computer to use a mouse, steve jobs publicly admitted he saw the mouse and copied it along with the gui.
\xerox never got apple shares, they sued apple for copywright infringement
\too many idiots on here to freaking lazy to read history

\xerox sued …
lie
\xerox sued apple for stealing the idea of the graphical user interface and sued them for stealing the one button mouse. it also sued them for stealing the idea of an ethernet.
\learn some history
no drives needed? …
no drives needed? are you insane? if you buy a macbook air you have to buy an external drive or another whole computer to borrow a drive.
Johnmonk666:
…
Johnmonk666:
That’s just meaningless babble.
First wireless, etc: Windows? Are you a crazy person?
Microsoft is a Software company. They didn’t invent this stuff.
Second, Apple doesn’t go BlueRay, because:
1. It’s too expensive.
2. Differences to an upscaling DVD player on HD TV don’t justify replacing your libraray AGAIN.
3. Physical media is already dead, or dying. HD content will come, like everything else from the “cloud”.
No drives needed (see: MacBook Air”.
4. BlueRay is a clusterfuck.
